Swap your usual New Year’s Resolutions for these 7 Soulful Questions

Fed up with New Year’s resolutions falling by the wayside? Try swapping them for these 7 soulful questions and honour the start of a new year with greater personal clarity and insight.

I love the energy and optimism that surrounds the New Year, I also always enjoy reflecting on the year that has passed and setting intentions for the year ahead.  However, I’m not so sure that New Year’s resolutions are really that effective.  Looking back over the last decade of my own resolutions I still haven’t learnt a second language or managed to stick to an exercise class.

So as we rapidly approach the end of another year (not to mention the start of a new decade!) I started to think whether there was a better way to set intentions than just your humble old resolutions? That’s when the idea came… What about a succinct list of soulful questions that would promote clarity? What if you through the process of reflection you could start a New Year on a sound footing of insight and awareness?

So without further ado – here then are our 7 soulful questions which I hope will enable you to reflect on the year that has passed and prepare yourself for the year (and decade) ahead. Take your time to answer the questions, whilst an intuitive answer is highly valuable there is also much to be said for sitting with a question and seeing what is revealed over the course of a few hours or days. I would definitely recommend grabbing a pen and writing down your answers. Journalling not only documents your thought process it also allows free flow of expression in a way seldom done when we are chatting with others or talking to ourselves. It’s also really interesting being able to go back and re-read such moments and seeing how far you have evolved and grown.

1.

What (or who) are you holding on to that no longer serves you?

2.

What are you taking too personally?

3.

What have you done well and what could you have you done better? What can you learn from this?

4.

What could you start doing immediately than would improve the quality of your life?

5.

What do you tend to do that gets in your own way (including patterns of thought)?

6.

What aspects of your life no longer fully reflects who you are (or aspire to be)? Are you ready and happy to change some of them?

7.

What small steps can you take towards changing something that seems overwhelming, or too big to immediately tackle?

These questions are designed to get you ruminating and questioning so that you can delve into the depths of self reflection and self enquiry.  It is only when we are brave enough to connect and commune with our soul in this way that real growth occurs and transformation can take place.

Resolutions are about doing things in a different way.  Self enquiry on the other hand enables us to see what we need to change and why. I hope that you can join me in answering these questions and that as a result, you find greater clarity and insight for the new year and the next decade.
