Frida Kahlo was a 2oth century, Mexican artist, known just as much for her unique, colourful and uncompromising portraits, costumes and artefacts as her compelling life story. Ahead of her time in terms of mindset and attitude she fearlessly tackled themes about identity, love, the human body and death as well as gender, race and class! Disabled by polio as a child she was studying to become a physician when, at eighteen, she suffered a devastatingly spinal injured in a bus accident. Bed ridden for months she returned to her childhood passion of painting and her career as an artist began. She would never fully recover from the spinal injury and suffered lifelong pain.
Married to another painter, Diego Rivera, Frida dedicated her life to her art. Her spirit and inspiring character is captured perfectly in the story around her last exhibition – her first solo event. With her health rapidly declining she was advised by her doctor not to attend. However she ordered her four poster bed to be moved from her home to the gallery. To the surprise of all her guests she arrived in an ambulance and was carried by stretcher to the bed where she stayed for the duration of the party. She would die the following year.
“I’m the kind of woman that if I want the moon, I take it down myself.” With quotes as powerful as this we hand drew the iconic image of Frida Kahlo and filled her hair with her most empowering and profound sayings. Her iconic face has been hand screen printed in two colours on a medium fit, white T-shirt.
