The story of the ‘Mind is Clear Light’ T-shirt
Designed for us by a Tibetan calligrapher, this striking graphic features the phrase ‘mind is clear light’ written within classical Tibetan cloud forms.
‘Mind is clear light’ is a line from the ‘Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāparamitā’ by Shakyamuni Buddha. Prajñāparamitā is a Sanskrit word that means ‘perfection of wisdom’ and refers to a perfected way of seeing the nature of reality.
Luminosity, or clear light, is a central concept in Tibetan Dzogchen Buddhism and is usually used to describe the true nature of mind, or ultimate root of consciousness . The nature of unconditioned awareness is said to be glaringly empty (sunyata), lucidly clear, vividly pure, spontaneously present, perfectly even and expansively open.
Within the artwork, which has been hand screen printed on the back of this raisin T-shirt there is a great deal of symbolism. The clouds represent negative conditioning and emotions that arise within our own (ego centric) mind that obscure the ‘clear light’. The ultimate objective of Dzochen practice is to dispel the clouds of ‘ignorance’ that obscure the true nature of reality in order that unconditioned pure awareness is established. We hope that it inspires you every time you wear it.
