In Tibet the Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are realised beings, inspired by the wish to attain complete enlightenment, who have vowed to be reborn in the world to help all living beings.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people. He was born in 1935, in a small village called Taktser in northeastern Tibet, to a peasant family. At two years of age His Holiness was recognised, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama. He began monastic education aged six. At 23, His Holiness sat his final exam in Lhasa’s Jokhang Temple, passing with honours he gained the highest doctorate in Buddhist philosophy.
We decided to honour his Holiness with a T-shirt on which his face has been recreated using dozens of his quotes and wisdom. Dalai Lama means Ocean of Wisdom. Tibetans normally refer to His Holiness as Yeshin Norbu, the Wish-fulfilling Gem, or simply, Kundun, meaning The Presence.
In 1950, after China invaded Tibet, His Holiness was called upon to assume full political power. In 1954, he went to Beijing and met with the Chinese leaders. Finally, in 1959, following the brutal suppression of the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa by Chinese troops, His Holiness was forced to escape into exile. Since then he has been living in Dharamsala, northern India.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He also became the first Nobel Laureate to be recognised for his concern for global environmental problems.
Throughout his life His Holiness has travelled worldwide to promote harmony, peace and compassion. He has also authored or co-authored more than 110 books and since the mid-1980s has even engaged in dialogue with modern scientists, in the fields of psychology, neurobiology, quantum physics and cosmology. This has led to a historic collaboration between Buddhist monks and world-renowned scientists in trying to help individuals achieve peace of mind. It has also resulted in the addition of modern science to the traditional curriculum of Tibetan monastic institutions re-established in exile.
We hope that when you wear this T-shirt you can connect with the compassion of His Holiness and as you go about your day you to do in the spirit of harmony, peace and love.
