What about some soulful resolutions that will make your spirit shine & life in 2019 happier & easier?
Bet you can guess what top five New Year Resolutions crop up every year! Yep, that’s right; losing weight, exercising more, quitting smoking, cutting back on the booze and managing finances. But what about resolutions that are good for your soul?
Well here are our favourite 5 top five ideas that will help you to wake each and every day of 2019 feeling centred and connected to your soul, alive and vibrant in your spiritual life.
1. Connect with your soul
Most of us are far too busy and in all the dashing can spend days, weeks, months and even lifetimes living in our heads and in the outer perimeters of existence. And yet your soul is the core of who you really are. That quiet, still, eternal self. It is where your eternal flame burns and where your strength, power and intuition not to mention connection can be found. To connect with your soul all you need to do is find some time (five, ten, fifteen minutes) to be quiet and reflective. Maybe that’s early in the morning, late at night, in your car or a stroll in the park. It’s about allowing the mind and body to still so it’s an ideal time to practice gentle breathing exercises where you to still if you are out by the beach or in the park walk mindfully noticing everything your sense can see, feel and hear. We over-complicate everything, Hafiz (an ancient Persian poet) said “Just sit there right now. Don’t do a thing. Just rest.” And that’s a perfect start.
2. Read or listen to some inspirational books
Let’s face it: most of us say we “don’t have time” to read anything more than the news headlines on our phone or the emails crowding our inbox. While these aren’t in and of themselves bad, why not swap some time spent reading something that will inspire you? Maybe if you don’t have time to read you could start listening to a spiritual podcast as you walk the dog, commute to work or hoover the house. Start filling your mind with inspiration instead of the usual internal dialogue that your brain loops on!
3. Attend a workshop or weekend retreat
If you plan ahead, you can make the time for an evening, day or weekend talk, workshop or retreat. It doesn’t have to be expensive. In the U.K. there is Alternatives.org.uk, a charity who offer amazing talks and workshops all at subsidized prices by world-renowned teachers. Stepping out of your normal routine to listen to someone inspiring reinvigorates and ignites your vision. You might also learn new ideas that transform your life. Taking time for yourself is the greatest gift you can give yourself, which in turn means you have more to give others.
4. Practice gratitude
Start practising gratitude. Whether you start writing a gratitude journal or just set aside five minutes a day to sit quietly and reflect on what the day has brought you that you feel grateful for the regular practice of gratitude has lasting effects on the brain. It also boosts immunity, mental health, self-esteem and physical health. This isn’t about re-hashing the same things every day, it’s about actively seeking things each day that you feel grateful for. It might be an amazing sunset, a smile, even a text from a friend. Many trails have now shown that if you cultivate a deeper sense of gratitude you can re-wire your brain to a happier and more joyful disposition.
5. Listen mindfully
What you give you get back and what better way to spread love throughout 2019 than listening mindfully to others. When someone else is chatting to us it’s easy for our minds to wander, or for them to fill up with our own thoughts and words in readiness for when it’s our turn to speak. Mindful listening is when we put aside these tendencies and give our full attention and present awareness to the person speaking. It means you listen without judgement or control. It means the person speaking to you will feel they have been listened to attentively and been heard. It is a beautiful gift to hone in a world where social media is impacting our social skills and our ability to interact with each other in deep and meaningful ways.
What’s extraordinary here is making the effort to start building a bridge to your soul and connecting with your spiritual life. There are many ways you can do this, these are just a few, do try because the rewards are wonderful and amazing things begin to happen.
Who doesn’t want to feel more centred and connected, more intuitive and in flow with life? And all of these things are possible the moment you were to work on connecting with your soul.
